RTSC Masters Gala Reports
Sunday 1st June 2008 – Eastbourne Swimming Club 2008 Masters Open Gala.
Spirits were high as a strong squad of Romford Town Masters swimmers descended upon Eastbourne for their annual Masters Open Gala.
On the men's side, Gary Wraight, heading age group 'B' was on top form medalling in all five individual events that he swam. Gary's impressive achievements included triple gold medalling in the 50 breast, 100 breast and 100 IM. Garry also achieved silver medals in the 50 free and 100 free. Wade Rimbach, fresh back from the USA and competing in his first meet for the Romford Town Masters in age group 'S' achieved a gold in the 100 IM as well as two silvers in the 50 and 100 free. Tom Enright competing in the 'E' age group and currently in the middle of heavy training for the upcoming British Masters Championships delivered impressive swims including a solid 7 second personal best and silver medal in the 100 fly. Tom's rainbow of medals also included silver in the 100 free and 100 IM, and a bronze in the 50 free. Stan Clark, competing under age group 'K' continued to exhibit his lifelong dominance in the pool with gold's in both the 100 breast and 50 free. Also swimming under age group 'K' Janos Leigh took home silver in the 100 back as well as two bronzes in the 50 back, 100 free.
Stellar performances continued on the ladies side. Dawn Palmer, swimming under age group 'B' headed the strong ladies contingent on a successful day of swimming. Dawn achieved gold's in the 100 IM, 100 free and 50 butterfly. Her impressive achievements continued with silver in the 50 free. Kay Hamilton, soon to move up an age group, performed strongly under age group 'B.' Kay was a double gold medalist in the 100 fly and 100 free. Barbara Boxall, another hot contender in the 'F' age group achieved silver in the 100 free and bronze in the 50 free. Julie Sanders competing in age group 'C' had a successful weekend achieving silvers in the 50 free and100 breast. In age group 'A' Sally Wood swam with spirit to achieve a credible two silvers in the 50 breast and 100 back as well as two bronzes in the 100 breast and 100 IM. Team mate Tina Harris, also under age group 'A' completed the day with a bronze in the 50 breast stroke.
With the focus of the meet shifting from individual swims to team relays, the Romford Town Masters continued to impress. In the mixed 120+ 4x50 medley relay, Wade Rimbach, Julie Sanders, Kay Hamilton and Gary Wraight sealed a victory and took home gold. The same contingent achieved bronze in the mixed 120+ 4x50m freestyle relay. The victories continued in the mixed 200+ 4x50 mixed relay where the team of Dawn Palmer, Sally Wood, Stan Clark and Janos Leigh took home gold. The same contingent achieved silver in the mixed 200+ 4x50 freestyle relay.
The weekend was a successful meet full of strong performances by all swimmers. With a vast array of medals under their belt, the Romford Town Masters are now in the final stages of training for the British Masters Championships beginning on the 20th June in Manchester.
