The usual three day meeting, which had previously included the Bank Holiday Monday, was this year compacted into a tougher two days of competition.

14 years old Kelsey Richards successful season continued as she powered to three wins and a runner up spot from her seven top six finishes, in the girls 14/15 years age group. Despite being one of the younger competitors in this joint age group, she added to her growing collection of medals with a silver from a strong opening 400 metres IM swim, with a time of 5mins 17.95secs. This was closely followed by 4th place in the final of the 200 metres Freestyle. A determined effort over 800 metres freestyle brought her first gold medal and her time of 9mins 33.75, which gave her a comfortable victory, was again inside the National Qualifying Standard. Her second gold came at the start of day two with a comprehensive win over 400 metres Freestyle and she later collected her third gold with another clear win over 200 metres butterfly, with a time of 2mins 30.29secs. Just for good measure, she had other top six finishes, just outside of the medals in the 100 metres Freestyle, 100 metres Breaststroke and 100 metres butterfly. Richards also joined forces with Nicole Raymond, Jessica Coles and Sian Aston for 4th place in the girls Medley Relay event.

16 years old Daniel Stepton also came away with a fist full of medals. He opened his account with a six seconds PB, a long course NQT and 3rd place in the boys 15/16 years 400 metres Freestyle. He followed this up with silver in both the 50 metres Butterfly and 100 metres Freestyle finals before swimming the lead backstroke leg in the Boys 400 Medley Relay, where he joined with Jake Harrison, Grant Chandler and James Davis to take 3rd place. By qualifying to the 200 IM final he also gained entry to the Medley skins knockout final where he came runner up only conceding the last sprint over 50 meres butterfly, to GB s Xavier Mohammed from Bexley. Not finished yet, he controlled the 100 metres backstroke final, having gained poll position in the heats, to take the gold. With energy reserves running out fast, he rounded of his weekend late on Sunday evening, with a silver from the 50 metres Freestyle event.

In the Girls 16+ age group, 16 years old Jessica Coles, like Richards, was one of the youngest swimmers in her age category, though turned in some strong swims to secure three medals, two silver and a bronze. Her first silver, in a PB time of 5mins 21.81secs came in the 400 metres IM before she added her second with runner up spot over the 200 metres distance. Between these, she added 3rd place in the 200 metres Breaststroke and later gained 5th place in the 100 metres Breaststroke final.

15 years old Jake Harrison also had some outstanding swims to secure top six places in the boys 15/16 age group over 100 metres Breaststroke(4th), 50 metres Breaststroke(6th) and 400 metres IM(4th). His best result came from his 200 metres Breaststroke swim where he took the silver with a time of 2mins 44.51secs. Had fatigue from his earlier events not caught up with him the outcome here would surely have been greater.

After a tough week of training, understandably 15 years old James Davis was unable to match some of the competition times of the last month, though he still had enough in the tank to add to the relay bronze with another for 3rd place in the boys 15/16 years 400 metres IM, with a time of 5mins 04.71secs. His sights are now set firmly on Sheffield in four weeks time.

14 years old Sian Aston, seemed a little out of sorts in the heat of her 200 metres Breaststroke but managed to sneak into the final with sixth fastest. Here she surprised a few of her opponents as she came to life with a strong last 100 metres, surging through to take the bronze. She later also forced her way into the 100 metres Breaststroke final, finishing 6th.

There were several other good swims from Romford Town swimmers that contributed to an exciting and successful weekend of swimming.

Well done to all.

Gary Rogers

Last Updated: 07-May-2008
Webmaster: Alan Ward
&#169 2008 RTSC
