For some it was the opportunity of a dress rehearsal for the National event which, like this weekend's competition, will be held at Sheffield's Ponds Forge venue. Many of Town's swimmers had chosen not to include this event in their competition schedule on this occasion as they are preoccupied with the important business of revision and school exams.

16 years old Daniel Stepton again took on a busy schedule of events and got off to a cracking start over 100 metres Freestyle, where his time of 54.81secs saw him finish as 2nd fastest 16 years old. Another strong swim in the 100 metres Backstroke was again close to his best and his time of 1min.03.03 was only bettered by two other swimmers of his age. After the disappointment of a fairly lacklustre performance over 200 metres IM he was back on track with a lively 29.26secs over 50 metres Backstroke in the first of his afternoon swims. This was the fastest of his age and gave him his first senior top 10 finish of the weekend. There was a broad smile on his face later as he rounded off the first day by breaking the 2mins barrier over 200 metres Freestyle for the first time, with 1min 59.52secs. This also secured him his 4th Senior National Qualifying Time of the year. Choosing to limit his programme to only two events on Sunday, Stepton opened with a PB time of 2mins 14.08 over 200 metres Backstroke, before equalling his best over 50 metres Butterfly. Both races saw him finish among the top three 16 year olds and his weekend's exploits earned him the runner up position in the category of Top Boy in the 16 years and over age group.

14 years old Kelsey Richards had another excellent swim meet adding five PBs from her seven event programme, though was disappointed not to add to the four NQTs already under her belt. She opened with a solid swim over 400 metres IM, to take 5th spot in her age group before taking gold over 200 metres Butterfly, with a PB time of 2mins 29.07secs,less than a second away from the NQ standard. Another PB by more than a second over 200 metres IM saw the NQT elude her, this time by little more than a second, before missing out by only 0.30secs over 200 metres Freestyle, with a time of 2mins 13.78secs . Her other long course PBs came from her 100 metres freestyle (1.03.85) and 200 metres Breaststroke (2.56.82) events.

Like Stepton, 15 years Old James Davis loosened up with a strong 100 metres Freestyle swim. He followed this up with a two second PB time of 2mins 22.55secs over 200 metres IM that brought him through to 5th place in his age group. This swim had clearly set him up for a strong start to the afternoon session and there was elation when he realised, from the electronic score board, that he had secured his third NQT of the campaign from his 400 metres Freestyle swim. His time of 4mins 21.07secs, a three seconds PB, was also good enough for 3rd place in the 15 years age group. There were further PBs from Davis over 200 metres Freestyle (2.05.58) and 400 metres IM (4.59.84).

In the same age group, Jake Harrison got his weekend off to a flying start as he broke the 1 minute barrier over 100 metres Freestyle for the first time, with 59.91secs. This was closely followed by another PB with 34.14secs and 5th place over 50 metres Breaststroke. The first 50 metres of his 100 metres Breaststroke swim had promised more, though he still came away with another PB and 8th place. The pattern was similar over the 200 metres distance, where he was unable to quite fulfil the promise of the first half of the race, this time finishing 6th.

Despite being out of the water for much of the last month through injury, 13 years old Harriette Davis still turned in some strong performances. She opened with a top 10 finish over 200 metres Backstroke, where her time of 2mins 34.90secs was only a second outside of her best. Another gritty swim over the 100 metres distance brought her within half a second of a PB, with a time of 1min 14.13secs. Whilst understandably a little out of sorts over the longer 200 and 400 Freestyle distances she set a long course PB over both the 50 metres Freestyle and Backstroke events. Her backstroke time of 35.07secs was good enough to win her heat and secure her 4th place in the 13 years age group.

Romford s youngest competitor this weekend was 11 years old Charlie Davis who, like his sister Harriette, has had his training disrupted in recent weeks and like his sister also put in some gutsy swims. Undeterred by the lack of preparation, he achieved top 10 finishes in each of his four events. As expected, he found the going tough towards the end of each of his 400 Freestyle and 400 IM swims though battled to the finish. He showed a good turn of speed over in the 50 metres Backstroke and 50 metres Freestyle events, finishing in 4th and 6th places respectively.

24 years old Kira Fawke, restricted her weekend's swims to the shorter Freestyle events. She came away pleased with her weekend's work as she nipped a little off each of her previous best long course times over the 100 metres (1.03.70) and 200 metres (2.17.63) distances.

Well done to all those that swam this weekend
Gary Rogers

Last Updated: 08-Jun-2008
Webmaster: Alan Ward
&#169 2008 RTSC
